Powerful autobiographical drama about a young woman who has to make a psychological step on the transition to adulthood. The film is especially commendable for its virtually flawless performances by an excellent cast, especially Angelina Jolie (her best role ever?) and Winona Ryder.

In conclusion, I refer to the excellent analysis of Dievegge dated 17-08-2014, to which I gladly agree.

Weak Mangold.

As a director, he certainly has it in him. But now this is his fourth and only one has received a pass. The director does choose projects with a story, but the execution regularly fails, and so here too.

The first half hour is the best part of the film. Also the most peculiar, where the director's style often seems to emerge best. Still quite interesting and confused images, but eventually they don't appear anymore and the film starts to slide into a standard drama film.

Acting isn't too good either. The best acting comes from Goldberg and happy flurries from Ryder & Murphy. Ryder mostly falls back into his standard "look at me cute" role and it doesn't impress here. The brake doesn't really go off with her either, it remains too much in a safe area.

Jolie was certainly a strange choice. Besides the fact that she may look good, this is not a role that is made for her. It's all quite made and she's definitely not very cool and interesting. It's just too over the top and over-the-top. It just doesn't work.

And the further the film winds on, the more predictable it becomes. It's such a shame too, because the beginning promised another pretty quirky movie. But eventually the film gets more and more transparent, and more transparent, and more transparent, until the glass is gone and you can now name everything that is going to happen in the next few minutes.

Location also lacks some atmosphere. It's all a bit too much rainbows and unicorns, maybe something colder. Some drama for the rest that never quite gets off the ground and you have a film that really just doesn't do anything new and ruins a hopeful beginning.

Still points for the first half hour a de scenes with a hanging Murphy in the background. Those are still awful. But again, the build-up to that scene really lacks the grittiness of such a situation.
