Tour de force on a modest number of levels. The character traits that come with the stale monologues delivered by Edward Murrow strike a chord. This man is of bitter seriousness and his discourses have a very pregnant charge. It just radiates from his porem that the subjects he deals with are so delicate that the going or standing of civilization goes hand in hand with them. Class acted.

For anyone interested in political-cultural philosophy, this must be a real treat. For many other people, however, it will be raw, all too rational fare. After all, you are not automatically drawn into the story because the film is too fragmentary in nature. In fact, all it's all about is Murrow vs. McCarthy and when they take the podium. The other scenes look a bit pale. Especially the side plot of Robert Downey Jr. I don't really know what to do with it. It neither contributes to emotional involvement, nor is the narrative well thought out, nor is it exemplary for the era. A round of newspapers in a smoke-infused fifties cafe is a lot more immersive in that regard.

A film that doesn't really feel like a whole, but because of some strong elements it can be very hard. In some scenes, the feeling creeps in that you are watching something that really mattered. And that's nicely done. All in all, a document that manages to capture the juncture with verve and highlights it in a number of key scenes.

Beautifully shot film, excellent acting (strong characters portrayed without overacting) and interesting script. If you don't have any prior knowledge, it is sometimes difficult to follow completely (for example, I couldn't quite follow the dialogue in bed of that couple). The abrupt ending was also somewhat disturbing; I would have liked to see an epilogue come along (how did it end with the Murrows lawsuit, after all..? And what happened to that senator (I now know thanks to wiki, but would have preferred of the movie)?). Nevertheless recommended.

Not exactly familiar with this title so just tried it on a gamble. Although I don't feel like I was ever in the film for a moment, I did get a good impression and certainly in the long run for a rewatch.

Striking is the stylish black and white, the music and the editing. A certain quality and solidity emanate from this combination. However, it is the dry and fragmentary style that follows that often makes me read some dialogues twice. Woolly in word and sentence structure, not the directness of today, it doesn't really help to get a feel for this film.

Still, the visual style and especially the facial expression of Strathairn makes up for a lot and especially his message. Namely that the hunt for 'commies' is self-evident, but should not be at the expense of the individual, nor the rights of anyone or the constitution. An interesting theme in a turbulent time where people were also not averse to a smear campaign or smear campaign.

Fascinating, stylish, interesting, but not quite the thing. Maybe better next time.
