Bob Rafelson's 'Five Easy Pieces' marked the definitive breakthrough for Jack Nicholson in 1970 (a year after his supporting role in 'Easy Rider'). It also turned out to be the 'finest hour' of Karen Black playing the girlfriend of Nicholson's character Robert Eroica Dupea. His middle name already shows that he comes from a special background and that his parents expected quite a lot from him as a musician. However, his career does not extend beyond five simple piano pieces by Chopin, Bach and Mozart. This fight against expectations and the frustration about it sometimes makes Nicholson boil over, as in a famous scene about a chicken sandwich.

A somewhat outdated film about a timeless fact. A man who has left his past behind and the only comfort in his new life is that it is not the old one. But then he is confronted again with that new life. The bubble into which he fled bursts open. He comes across his past and therefore also himself. To finally realize that he can't just leave his past behind and run away from himself. The reason why he leaves behind his girlfriend at the end. Perhaps because he settled into the parental home against his will and thus began to be a part of it. He leaves everything behind, down to his coat, car and wallet to clearly distance himself from his own identity. Hoping to find answers again elsewhere.

That struggle with identity is of all times. In films you see that it is mainly related to a great tragedy. While it really gets to the core here with the main character at the center. Less fireworks maybe, but a bit more raw. With Nicholson clearly in shape.

It is not easy to go against the grain or to ignore the predetermined paths or expectations of your family and go your own way. Robert is one of them and chooses an atypical trajectory as a worker over a career as a piano virtuoso. In contrast, this can count. It was a nice scene when he climbed onto a removal van during the traffic jam and merrily played a tune on the stored piano there.

However, the culture of being a worker suits him better than that of slick gentlemen in high society circles, because at times he comes across as peasant and arrogant rather than polite and distinguished. And yet you can't just switch off your roots. He realizes this all the more because he has to visit his family again when his father deteriorates due to illness. It is a quest for identity and loyalty for him.

The movie is somewhat outdated. Not everything was equally interesting, but in general it was interesting enough. Nicholson in particular catches the eye of course. Story-wise, not exactly, but as said Nicholson makes up for a lot.
