It starts as Black Beauty, continues as The Birds and ends as The Pied Piper of Hamelin. It is an indictment of animal abuse, but without becoming preachy. The title indicates that you can also see it as an allegory about oppression. For a dog, man is a god who can be good or evil.

Two different dogs played the mongrel Hagen. Training the dogs is an achievement. I wonder how much computer animation went into it.

The story threatens to split into two, but in the end unity is restored because the storyline about the dogs and the one about Lili as a trumpet player come together. Dog lovers, go see this!

After Jupiter Holdja (2017) the second film I saw from this Hungarian director who was completely unknown to me until recently. And this one certainly did not disappoint, although I did have some difficulty with the first hour. Something about Lili loves Hagen and wants to do everything to get her dog back. Well, we've all seen this a hundred times before. But in the second hour the film takes a drastically different turn and it became an extremely exciting revenge film. Some scenes were not lying about the cruelty of the human race against the four-legged friends. But the four-legged friends would strike back like a well-organized army led by Hagen. I thought the last scene with Lili was truly magnificent. The question remains how it is possible to train those dogs so well. It must have been a hell of a job, I think.
I really have to keep a close eye on this director, because I also thought Jupiter Holdja, which I mentioned earlier, was a very special film, although less so than this one.

Wow. I have never seen a film where so much attention and love for the animal is expressed. The scenes in which Hagen (the main dog) connects with other dogs. How all those dogs communicate together, behave etc. That is so clever! Often they act very easygoing. Then dogs can talk and they are just like people. This is the first film where dogs are dogs. The message is clear, if you are nice to animals (nature) then nature is nice to you. If you are mean, then they will come and get you.

I read that other viewers would have preferred a "nice" ending. That everything turns out well, that Hagen meets a sweet family. If you end like that, then all the misery has been for nothing. The entire character development of such an animal is thrown overboard again. The moral here is, I think, animals are not good or bad. They do not know good or bad behavior. They only adapt to the circumstances and if we make them very bad, then that has very bad consequences. Also for us. Beautiful film this.
