Ozon not only makes an emotional drama with Frantz, he dresses it up even more beautifully. A story just after the 1st world war, in which there are only losers. Now is the time to process grief, but it is difficult. Life is a mix of loss and being angry with the adversary. In between looking for a way to continue living.

The images in black and white with the melancholic music, show that melancholy time well. The moments when there is some hope or memories of the past, black and white makes way for warm colors. Cinematically really impressed, nice work here!

The revelation comes sometime halfway through the movie when Adrien is back to Paris and Anna stops the farce for Frantz's parents so as not to hurt them. She is angry with Adrien, but at the same time she realizes that thanks to Adrien she just got the support she didn't find. Partly because of love and partly by telling the pastor to forgive, she then goes to Paris. After Adrien in Germany, Anna is now the odd one out in France. How the train travels through France with the battlefield in the reflection of the windows... To become quiet. Later when she sees that Adrien has another love, it seems to become clear that hope and love may have been confused. In the end, she appears to have made a new start. She continues to uphold the white lie to the parents. And she herself stays in Paris to live the fantasized life of Frantz and be with him.

A very nice film that lacks just that little bit more to be a real top film. But one of his better titles, both in terms of story and the film itself. Which, as said before, mainly impresses with the cinematography.

The European arthouse doesn't get any more classic. And I love it. Ozon's sleek camerawork, this time in black and white with a few nice transitions to color, and the moody music create a very neat whole. The shot of ruins reflecting in the train window is very beautiful, should have been held longer. Compliments also for the old trains and cars on display. But what makes Frantz stand out above average is the original story, which manages to captivate throughout the entire playing time. In the last ten minutes everything is different than you thought, without ever feeling like a plot twist or anything like that. Well done. The film misses the mark on two occasions: the expressions of patriotism in a German and French café feel like an obligatory number to make a statement and detonate within the story. Another great film by Francois Ozon.

I wasn't really sure what to expect, but this movie really grabbed me. Actually a rather unfashionable story, which flows very smoothly and makes good use of various art forms such as music, painting and poetry.
