There is a fine line between genuine emotion and sentiment. In my opinion, that limit is not crossed here, thanks to the natural acting and the realistic film style.

Susanne Bier is influenced by the principles of Dogma 95 and Lars von Trier, especially in the use of hand-held camera. That produces images that are quite close to the human way of looking: with shocks, not completely stable. However, she also deviates from those principles: sometimes she uses a dash of background music and there is a short flashback in it (het adultery).

Jacob Petersen (Mads Mikkelsen) must have had his wild years with sex, drugs and rock & roll, not the type to marry. After that he must have gone to India to want to improve the world from a naive idealism. Jörgen (Rolf Lassgärd) is his opposite: a successful businessman with wife and child. The clash between these two extremes forms the basis of the story. It turns out they need each other. Jacob needs Jörgen for his money; Jörgen needs Jacob to take his place after his death. We do not find out what disease Jörgen suffers from. He does look very healthy and energetic for someone with only months to live, though it's not impossible.

The most mature character is Helene (Sidse Babbett Knudsen, later known from Borgen). Whether she will let Jacob take Jörgen's place entirely remains an open question, but I have the impression that she will be the one to decide that.

A point of discussion may be whether Jacob is making the right decision by trading his life in India for that in Denmark, and thus his foster child Pramod for his biological daughter Anna.

This is a successful middle ground between a traditional plot structure and a European, realistic style. I want more Beer!

A more than decent drama that can be called in the same breath as Festen in terms of content. What better time to come out with a family than during a party or wedding? Apparently the Scandinavians like that.

Many images with contrast, the world Jacob is committed to and then finds himself in, just to name one, how you can still be happy with less and unhappy with everything, and the choice where Jacob is presented. I personally didn't find it very surprising. Of course it came off that Jakob was taken for something else by Jorgen and after the conclusion that Jakob and Helene knew each other I was already like is Jorgen dying? That he secretly takes pills from a locker and that in the meantime Jakob turns out to be the father of the eldest daughter was confirmation for me. Nevertheless, the film unfolds in a number of well-acted scenes where the sparks and fire fly like the conversation in the kitchen. Great actors both Mikkelsen and Lasgard. A man by the way, where it shows that he is a first class male putter who always gets his way and has probably never shown a moment of weakness or been ill and is now confronted with the inevitable. Nicely formed character, although sometimes slightly shocking, but it does explain the whole approach.

Beautiful cinematography, atmospheric music, beautiful fade in and fade out's. Well acted, different story. Good film in that sense, but it just doesn't touch Festen's level.

Time to see the movie, especially since I couldn't remember much about the movie. Ideal, therefore, to allow me to be surprised again. Of course enjoyed again, with moments the scenes really come in. Time is taken to tell the story and the acting is very strong.

Visually, the film is not special, it is mainly about the story and the characters. But what Susan Bier does well portray is the doubt in this film. Main character Jacob Petersen in particular faces a major dilemma and it is very well portrayed how he weighs up the options, how he thinks about priorities, the painful choice he has to make.

'After the wedding' is the common thread in the film, as the characters keep putting off their unspoken words until 'after the wedding'. But also how everything changes after that wedding. The question of whether you do well to want to forget things and move on, or just talk about it with your loved one. And what the consequences are.

Great movie that still works after so many years. The high score is still awarded. I would like to be surprised again in a few years and see it again.
