The idea of watching everything by Hitchcock (2 more!) sometimes works out well, but there are also those dramatic works that really require you to persevere. To be clear: Easy Virtue belongs to the latter category.

An unattractive, uncharming and downright unsympathetic chain-smoking man-eater winds a wealthy English young man around her bony finger; they marry. What he doesn't know is that our Larita has already gone through a painful divorce; a cardinal sin in upper-class England a century ago.

No feeling is created for the characters at all (except that you start to hate them) and the dull dullness of noble rural life spills over onto the screen and the viewer; probably the least Hitch of them all.

1 small star.

Hitchcock's last silent film under Michael Balcon is one that Hitchcock's heart was not in. After this he would accept an improved contract with British National Pictures. Apart from these footnotes, this is a solid, but substantively dated melodrama about Larita Filton [Isabel Jeans] who, after a (for that time) divorce scandal, finds a new great love in John [Robin Irvine] and keeps her past hidden from him. When John's mother [Violet Farebrother] begins to wonder how she knows her son's fiancé, it's only a matter of time before the secret comes out. Or would Larita come out unscathed? Hitchcock found the scene with the telephone operator especially interesting, despite solid acting and an excellent leading role for Jeans.

Easy virtue is an expression from a bygone era that refers to a person who willingly shares the body with others. And if I understand correctly, it concerns women. Just like the expression, the entire film dates from a bygone era. It has a soap-like story that offers an insight into some of the mores and customs of British class society and what it entails. It has a high melodrama tabloid content. Visually, this film has less to offer for me than other early Hitchcock films (silents). I liked the shots of the judge's wig, which gives a strange look. Other than that, it's a no-brainer compared to other silents of the time. Still entertaining because of the gossip content.

hitchcock challenge #16
