Europa Europa plot

"A True Story"

A German Jewish boy tries to survive between 1938 and 1945 by hiding his background and adapting flawlessly to his circumstances - initially in a communist orphanage, then as a member of the Hitler Youth. The boy, who before the war dreamed of becoming a star like Clark Gable, is forced to act in a crucial stage of life in which adolescents are struggling with their identity anyway. He will settle into his role as the perfect little Nazi there for years to come, though he never gives up on his deeply rooted Jewish background.

Still an impressive film. It took a while to get into it, but it soon dragged me along. The narration at the beginning reminded me of Die Blechtrommel (1979), although these are two very different films. This film gives a good picture of how Jews were viewed within 'Aryan' circles. Everything is just too thick, there are quite a few coincidences in the story, and the acting of the main character could also be better. But I found it very interesting and fascinating, never got long-winded or boring.

I read that people have difficulty with the 'school lesson about Jews', I also find it a bit bold, but after seeing the propaganda film Der Ewige Jude (1940), in which Nazis neatly explain how you distinguish a Jew from an Arian in their view, it really doesn't surprise me. That scene can be pretty close to reality.

Even if it is not perfect, it is definitely recommended, especially if you are not familiar with this true story like me. A solid 3.5*

In the genre of films about the persecution of the Jews during WWII, a very special one.

The adventure of a Jewish young German who takes a gamble to escape the Nazi madness and who is actually lucky, in spite of many hardships and fears of death, especially those of being recognized in the physical field (in the development of his childhood it will cause a lot of frustration) and the realization that he has escaped the worst will only dawn on him later, when he sees the ghettos.

The film certainly underlines the fanaticism with which a German youth was trained to glorify Germany and its führer and how hatred of the Jews had to be unconditional and self-evident, but also that some people thought differently about it.

Strong film in which I occasionally had trouble with the acting of the main character, as if he could not properly assess the situation he was in.
