The film begins with the statement that the story is fiction and truth at the same time, inspired by the experiences of Anna Rosmus from Passau. The story is about the obstacles and threats that a young researcher encounters when she starts digging into the past of prominent citizens during the Third Reich. As such, the film symbolizes many more or less closed communities in post-war Germany. Or as director Verhoeven writes in the introduction of the film: ”Es geht mir nicht um die Geschichte einer bestimmten Stadt in Deutschland, sondern es geht um die Wahrheit aller Städte in unserem Land.”

A very interesting fact, which in its core also comes into its own, but as a film only scores moderately due to the structure that Verhoeven has chosen. In my opinion, he could have shown the story of and about Sonja (Lena Stolze) much better in chronological order without the annoying interruptions of Sonja as the narrator.

The interruptions as a narrator did not really bother me , but the otherwise somewhat strange way of camera work and scenes with a different background I found quite useless and added nothing .

It is now common knowledge that many petty co-perpetrators of the 3rd Reich were able to go back to their old lives after the war, even many who had worked in the Nazi courts were able to do so as well.

Apart from the well-known names, only the worst minor perpetrators of the concentration camps were punished or fled abroad, where some even remained untouched for years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdyWbHE-IS8

Sonja is not a terrible girl at all. She is alert and smart and, in the context of an essay competition, focuses on the National Socialist past of the town of Pfilzing, where she lives with her family. The subject of her essay encounters a lot of opposition in the town. The film is based on truth. The experiences of writer Anja Rosmus in the town of Passau were enough inspiration for the director to make a film about it.

Despite the weighty theme surrounding civic courage and the taboo surrounding a Nazi past, the film strikes a strikingly humorous tone. Contrasts are funny and various ideas are cleverly ridiculed. It provides great entertainment. The narrative style is lively and spiced with fun running gags and cynical reflections. Towards the end the lightness runs out a bit and the story suddenly feels heavier than before. Fortunately, that doesn't feel forced or uncomfortable. Great movie..
