Overwhelming.

City of God completely blew me away. From start to finish, the raw images and sad images at the same time are done perfectly. I knew he was good but this one was unbelievable by far. One of the best movies I've ever seen.

The images are sometimes very shocking because a shot in the hand or feet? are of course hard, but there are occasionally bright spots. Like the boy with the camera. The acting is very good. And the violence has been heavily portrayed.

A must see!

Less grand than I remember.

The fragmentary focus is mainly to blame for this. Of course the city is the only real main character and the film manages to reduce it well to a manageable group of main characters/gangs, but I missed a bit of a common thread in the story. Strangely enough, the presence of the narrator, Rocket, actually emphasizes that lack. His storyline may offer some positive counterpoint in a world of misery, his role is not really interesting and Alexandre Rodrigues, who plays him, is not the most charismatic on-screen presence. The fact that he at most has a supporting role in the whole thing doesn't really work either.

Yet the audiovisual style is still strong. Perhaps somewhat outdated over the years, it easily gives the film that shine from which it derives its unique identity. Overall remarkably good acting and a nice flow through the film, although it starts to drag a bit in terms of attention at two thirds. Extremely entertaining with a few catchy characters and appropriate rudeness (but not that rude either). I'll leave the 4.5* for a while, but I happen to be working on my list for MM top 1000, and there it drops some spots.

Cidade de Deus is indeed a portrait that may be reasonably realistic. Powerfully put together. Clearly a lot of thought has been put into it. I personally think this film is stronger than the Tropa elite series.
