Who Warner Bros. says, says crime film. In the early 1930s, with successful and still impressive films such as The Big House, Little Caesar and Scarface, they responded to the need to show rampant crime, where the message 'Crime does not pay' - because of the stranglehold of The Hays Office - always emphatically determined the final. Wallace Beery, Edward G Robinson and James Cagney became icons of their generation with these smooth, sharply written and highly acted classics.
Caged can be regarded as the female version of The Big House and in most respects is not inferior to the illustrious trendsetters of the genre. Under the intelligent, but never too flashy direction of craftsman John Cromwell, we see how the innocent, naive Eleanor Parker gradually loses her humanity through the system. Of course there is the prison warden 'from hell', superbly played by tall, imposing Hope Emerson. Cromwell cleverly conveys the increasing sense of isolation visually and the scenario contains a number of impressive moments, especially in the second half such as the scene in which the prisoners burst into Christmas carols together, the moving scenes with a small kitten and yet also the prison riot . The downside is that the pace in the first half is a bit on the slow side, so you might lose your attention for a while. But stick with it, this film recovers excellently in the second half and leads to an intelligent finale.

nice but to say that the trauma that changes her so is convincing , well no ?

Shaving my head and occasionally spending time in isolation doesn't seem very earth-shattering to me.

But hey, it was 1950 and it wasn't supposed to be too shocking, of course.

Still a 3 for the decent acting.
