Colonia plot
"There is no turning back"
Lena and Daniel, a young German couple, become embroiled in the Chilean military coup of 1973. Daniel is kidnapped by Pinochet's secret police. Lena manages to track him down in a locked area in the south of the country called Colonia Dignidad. The Colonia pretends to be a charitable mission led by lay preacher Paul Schäfer, but in reality it is a place from which no one escapes.

I think it's a topper. Especially the dark chapter in Chilean history, which few probably know, is extremely interesting, and a pretty exciting and captivating film is made of it. Bet that after the film you will look something up on the internet? . A German couple, whose boy (Daniel) actively participates in pro-Allende meetings and whose girl (Lena) is an air hostess, are deeply in love with each other. That suddenly comes to an end when Pinochet commits a coup and opens a repressive hunt on the opposition. Daniel is arrested and taken to the Colonia Dignidad, a government torture camp, under the cover of a cult led by a deranged and pedophile ex-Nazi . Once Lena goes looking for Daniel in the Colonia, the film had me completely on board and shows the film from its best side as a thriller. I have to say, Emma Watson doesn't appeal to me much, but I found her fine here... hard to understand why she chooses to live in this kind of slavery for months, but the ways of love are unfathomable. That cult leader was a really scary creep... Without a doubt highly recommended.

oppressive. The story is fictional, but the background, the sect where everything takes place, was unfortunately real. The atmosphere there is reminiscent on the one hand of a concentration camp (the gate, the torture chambers), on the other hand of The Handmaid's Tale with the character Gisela as a kind of Aunt Lydia. I never expected Watson and Brühl together in the same film, but they do have chemistry.
On Rotten Tomatoes, this film doesn't have the best criticism and I read there, among other things, the criticism that the film trivializes the events during the Pinochet regime. There is also a similar criticism of La Vita è Bella, which I also found strong. In my view you can still make an impressive film about a historical period even if the main characters are fictional and the events in the plot are not completely realistic. In the case of this film, the breakout is quintessentially Hollywood thrilling. I don't mind, because I found it very compelling anyway. 3.5*.

What an impressive movie this was. Emma Watson steals the show, but what a leech that Paul Schäfer is. In the name of god he could do so much then. Glad he was eventually arrested, but unfortunately he never really had his karma. The film illustrated the atmosphere well and at times it was quite exciting.
3.5 stars.
