Cornered plot
Towards the end of World War II, pilot Laurence Gerard sets out for France to find out who was responsible for the death of a group of resistance fighters, including his bride. After some investigation, he discovers that Marcel had given Jarnac the order, but he was killed, according to official sources. Gerald refuses to believe this and decides to track down Jarnac.

Initially I thought it was an intrigue worthy of Hitchcock, but afterwards it becomes too complex and there is even an ending reserved with some scenes that border on the ridiculous.
Dick Powell has never convinced me in such roles and won't convince me now.
It should be remembered that the emigration of war criminals and collaborators to South America was already well known in 1945 when the film was made.

This film has a complicated script, which means that as a viewer you have to sleep in to keep your wits about you. Personally, I like that complexity, à la The Big Sleep, which contributes to the hopeless atmosphere of doom of such noirs.
I find Dick Powell credible as a leading man, and he has the perfect corrupted opponent in Walter Slezak. A real femme fatale is not present, Micheline Cheirel's role is too straight forward for that.
Direction by Edward Dmytryk and photography by cinematographer Harry J. Wild are spot on. The entire team had also made the classic Murder, My Sweet the year before. Although this predecessor is more recommended for the casual viewer, in terms of pace and tension it exceeds this Cornered, in which there is mainly a lot of talking.
