Blanc d'Ébène plot

During the Second World War, Adjutant Donnadieu is involved in the administration of a canton (a kind of sprawling city district) of a place in Guinea in West Africa and the recruitment of infantrymen. He's a traditional, well-meaning know-it-all, the European who doesn't understand the nascent nationalism: the urge to break free from the French colonial yoke. He becomes involved with black teacher Kotto in a conflict that tragically spirals out of control.
