Blonde Venus plot

"What could she do but flee from love? She loved two men at once!"

During a walk in the Black Forest with a group of students, American chemist Edward 'Ned' Faraday meets German artist Helen. They get married and move to New York where their son Johnny is also born. After twelve years of exposure to radium during his experiments, Ned becomes ill. His doctor tells him he has a chance of recovery in Dresden, but the treatment would cost $1,500. Helen decides to work in a nightclub under the pseudonym 'Blonde Venus' to earn money for Ned's journey. When Helen meets playboy and millionaire Nick Townsend, she decides to ask him for money if he wants an affair with her.

I found this movie looking for Cary Grant movies. And then I saw that Marlene Dietrich played along too. But Blond Venus is a Dietrich movie with Cary Grant in a supporting role. Not bad, of course, but a completely different type of film. Apparently she also wrote the script. The film may be pre-Hays Code (the film law that censored a lot of things to 'protect' the image of the industry), in the film world it was already widely used in Hollywood since 1930. As a result, this Blond Venus was also first refined before the end result found an audience. In a film about a social theme with a woman who accepts the advances of a playboy for some money, it has an effect.

Blond Venus does have to contend with that censorship, but thanks to Dietrich it is still worth it. Visually also wonderful to see. Unfortunately, the attention of the script has weakened somewhat so that the attention has shifted more to the cabaret acts.
