Before I fall to sleep

A Chick flick in a supernatural setting. This is the best way to watch Before I fall. The Groundhog Day principle also makes the title interesting for the male audience, but don't let this mislead you too much; the drama still predominates here.
This is not to say that the genre drama is equivalent to the term Chick flick, but the entire style of the title does radiate this. If you can see through this, there remains quite a nice story, but unfortunately there are other things that can interfere.

First of all, this is the creators' choice to have Samantha in a Time Loop instead of Lindsay. The Time Loop had taught Samantha to look at life in a different way, but Lindsay needed this lesson much more, in my opinion. I also didn't find the depth of the characters very special. I found Samantha and her problems a bit mundane, and there is far too little background about Ally and Elody. Lindsay's past is briefly touched upon -the divorce of her parents- , but this character also remains too much on the surface so that you get far too little insight with regard to the shield she has for the created the outside world.

Finally, I thought the punch line of the story -bullying is not a game- was much too thick and even went a bit in the pedantic direction towards the end. This is a shame, because I understand the idea behind it and I believe that it is indeed strong. The makers just had better not have to announce this to the viewer in an obtrusive, almost Disney message-like way.

At the end of my story there is not enough left for this film, but luckily I could still lose myself in the beautiful brown viewers of Halston Sage...

“How is it possible to change so much and not be able to change anything at all?”

A genuine young adult film with a twist. I am especially impressed by the acting and the beautiful environment that has been chosen. Deutch, Sage, Miller etc. Young actors who all get along well with the material. The script has some clichés, but the lives of mainly teenage girls are strongly portrayed.

Before I Fall is certainly not a light-hearted film and there is a dark veil over everything and everyone all the time. Samantha (Deutch) revives one day over and over, and has to figure out why this is happening to her. To learn some important life lessons as it turns out. Getting to know yourself, being nice to those around you, don't bully, be open to other people, learn from your mistakes etc. It's not all very new or exciting and the enamel of your teeth gets a big blow from all the sweetness . But the mystery of why this is happening to Samantha keeps it interesting for a long time. The ending is strange and many questions remain. But Before I Fall deserves credit for successfully uniting a teen drama and a time loop story.

Still pretty strong for a college girl movie,

What I was happy about was that the atmosphere was not bright, glittery and screaming and that the film clearly wanted to put its finger on the sore spot. Samantha is the average girl you see on Instagram every day. She wakes up and it promises to be a really cool day, because it's Cupid's Day or something along those lines. A festive atmosphere in the car with her friends, handing out roses at school, especially the big house party, the painful part with Juliet, that accident... and then Samantha wakes up again the same day.

It evokes memories of The Butterfly Effect. I still haven't seen Groundhog Day myself. But the effect wasn't too bad. However, there seemed to be a great distance between the events that Samantha relives time and again; for example: after she has experienced the day for the third time, and Juliet turns out to have committed suicide when they were not present at the party... she has to wake up again about 20 times + the bad girl before she decides out of the blue to save Juliet from death. Anyway... The fact that Samantha finally deals with the situation I thought was a nice fact.

The raw bleak atmosphere between the apparent euphoria and teenage girl stuff also did the film well, as did the soundtracks. The acting was also convincing in my opinion, although fortunately it is not only suitable for fourteen-year-old girls (or girls who remain fourteen their whole lives). The ending was good too... although it looked a bit like a polished ending to The Butterfly Effect.

Could certainly go through with it.
