Saw it last Thursday 30/8 and I wanted to let it sink in before I wrote a review here on MM. Burning, based on a short story (Barn burning) by great writer Haruki Morakami, is said to follow the book or short story quite well, except that "burning" here refers to greenhouses and not barns as the title of the book explains.

Burning is a two and a half hour character study of the characters in which the viewer gains access to their personalities little by little and is rewarded with a real climax at the end. Burning has a long mysterious run-up in which a number of themes such as jealousy, loneliness or class inequality are intertwined. The film also has a political side, culminating in the best scene of the film where the free-spirited unrestrained Haemi is dancing sultryly half-naked with the North Korean mountains in the background. In terms of statement to the communist north, this can count.

Burning is a gem for those who want and can muster the patience for it. You get something beautiful in return that makes the film linger for days. Burning prompts me to run to the local library this week to bring Poetry and Secret sunshine.

A short story by the Japanese author Murakami and a full-length film adaptation by the South Korean director Chang-dong Lee produces a wonderfully mysterious masterpiece that is completely realistic.

Main character Jong-Soo is the opposite of Ben in everything. Their mutual friend Hae-Mi brings them together. Then the movie has been on the road for a while and we got to know Jons-Soo as a somewhat quiet country boy who wants to be a writer, drives an old rusty truck, stands up for his somewhat aggressive father and masturbates alone on Hae-Mi's apartment where he looks after her cat. We will not soon forget his sad look and plump lips.

As in a Janus head, Ben stands opposite him in everything. Ben drives a Porsche, lives luxuriously, has many friends and a curious pastime. His somewhat subdued, arrogant smile is chiseled across his face.

Just as a Janus head shows two faces of the same person, Ben and Jons-Soo also have similarities. Both smoke, claim to have all kinds of jobs, have hidden a secret box, are fascinated by each other and in love with the same Hae-Mi.

What I describe above are outward appearances that become apparent pretty quickly. That's not what the movie is about. No, rather it is the character study of the two boys that is a cinematic revelation. Slowly but not sure we learn more, little by little but not completely. On the border with North Korea, the tension can be cut between the old, classic South Korea in the person of Jong-Soo leaning towards the new era and the new, capitalist South Korea, depicted in Ben.

In between flutters Hae-Mi, a jump-in-the-field with sometimes deep thoughts who dances half naked to the sultry notes of Miles Davis - a scene that has classic potential.

Beoning revised in O42 on an even larger canvas. Sitting silently admiring the entire playing time. These are those rare movie experiences. Should have won Cannes. Top 5 material of the 21st century. Speechless!
