Byzantium has become a quirky vampire film. A genre that has reinvented itself several times. The approach is more atmospheric, no more gothic or horror. More of a mystery. It starts well, but sometimes I miss the familiar vampire elements. They may of course be original in this, but due to a decent alternative the characters miss the necessary hidden layer. A dark side that provides the mystery and menace. The trick with the nail is ultimately a bit bland. The main characters are not bad. I'm quite fond of Ronan, Arterton is fine.

Byzantium is an original part in the history of the vampire film, but does not know how to fully utilize the chosen path. Too bad, because with a little more attention to the atmosphere this would have been a strong film.

What is it with vampires? I don't think they're sexy, they aren't particularly photogenic and their eternal life issues are well known by now, but they still pop up regularly in the cinema, just like zombies. Most vampire movies leave me completely cold, but luckily an Let the right one in appears every now and then to make it clear that even on the most well-trodden paths, there is still something new to come up with. Byzantium isn't nearly as good as that film, but at least the acting is excellent, the story is not very predictable, the photography is regularly pleasing to the eye, and afterwards I really wondered how the the two heroines would go on. Still a very successful film, which kept my attention for the full playing time.

descending.

With this I mainly refer to the course of Byzantium, another vampire film that is added to the career of director Neil Jordan. I think he likes his imaginative figures because there are several films of his that revolve around them. I think Byzantium is just a little less successful in that regard with its other films in mind.

The film does have a stylish first quarter. With beautiful camera work, a nicely chosen location and excellent acting by Arterton, I was immediately captivated. It also helps that Jordan explains his story nicely by not immediately revealing where it is all going. This ensures that the story manages to work very well in the first half hour before it really reveals itself.

Shame about the movie were the flashbacks to the past. I had a hard time swallowing all those events from the Middle Ages or any other period. I don't particularly like that period, and judging by the poster I thought I was watching a nice stylistically well designed vampire film. That seemed to be the case for a long time, but the tough second half sadly changed that.

The acting is pretty okay, the character development is nicely worked out, but the story takes a direction that just doesn't appeal to me. I realize that this is a bit of a lame criticism, but I had a hard time enjoying it. It also seems that Jordan went into the film motivated and eventually got bored with his own story, because after a while little of the beautiful style is left.

A strong first half and even stronger performances from Ronan and Arterton. The film sometimes manages to nicely mix the modern world with the old-fashioned world and has some cleverly designed images, but otherwise it was mainly a matter of sitting and waiting in the second half. Add to that a disappointing finale and you have a film that started out hopeful but ends sadly.
