“Do you trust me now?”
“Less than when I didn't trust you before.”

Original coming of age/crime film by Rian Johnson. The dialogues sometimes make it seem like you're watching a Shakespeare play, and it gives the film something authentic. The story is also presented in an original way. Brick is a crime mystery and a coming of age movie in one, and until the last scene with Gordon-Levitt and Nora Zehetner on the football field you don't know exactly how it all works. Johnson makes sure that it's all easy to follow, and just when you think you've figured out how the story works, Johnson comes up with a new puzzle piece.

Thick as a...

A stylish, sometimes funny, sometimes violent (sometimes simultaneously), ode to film noir - the first and only high school noir I know, when I watch the series Not counting Veronica Mars (could have been the inspiration here, no idea).

It seems like everything has a deeper meaning, but I can't fathom the whole thing (yet) - no disaster. Brain certainly seems to be a part of Brendan's personality (his rational side aka 'brain').
Lukas Haas and the one with the short fuse form a funny duo, who eventually get mot.
Add a number of appetizing filles fatales, a fine soundtrack and very atmospherically filmed scenes and you can have fun. You have to be in for a somewhat thick story and ditto characters.

Big 8 for now.

In any case, it does what it promises: a hardcore detective film that carries all the style characteristics of the genre. For example, Brendan is not the naive average student; he plays tricks on the director, conducts his own survey, manipulates the situations he finds himself in, isn't afraid to risk his life and solves the mystery with a splashing explanation. No shit Sherlock!

The drug dealer The Pin looks more like Dracula and the femme fatale is unsubtly dropped into the decor. It's all fairly transparent I thought and visually I didn't find it special, certainly not at the level of the real film noir : Brendan fiddles around a bit and in between takes a lot of punches that clearly have consequences more towards the end of the film . So, there were some good moments, that's for sure, but I also thought it was a bit incoherent mess.
