Sympathetic is indeed the right word for Adam. Adam is very sweet and vulnerable, and on the other hand quite annoying at times. To Beth the not always grateful task of protecting him from himself. This does not result in nearly as many dramatic developments as could have been, which makes Adam a film that is somewhat (too) easy to digest. I thought the ending was a bit strange. I didn't even necessarily need a happy ending with Adam and Beth back together, but I found Beth's note rather confusing. They haven't seen each other for a year and then she gives him a note that they apparently can do without each other? It seems to me that such a message is quite difficult to interpret, especially for someone with an autism spectrum disorder. By the way, I think it's well done how they showed that Adam has made progress.
I sometimes find Rose Byrne a bit forcedly cheerful, but Hugh Dancy is brilliant. I didn't expect less either, since in Hannibal he has already shown how well he can portray psychologically defective characters. Hugh Danny makes up for a lot for me.

“I can see that you're upset, but I don't know what to do.”

Small-scale and impressive film about a man with Asperger's Syndrome, who falls in love with his neighbor Beth. Which of course creates the necessary complications, but also results in a lot of beautiful things. I like these kind of movies that don't take much to impress. Two actors with fantastic chemistry, and a strong script that treats the problems Adam encounters with recognizability and integrity and does not trivialize them.

I can enjoy such a scene where Beth tries to walk up the stairs with a heavy suitcase, and Adam just stays put because he doesn't realize that Beth needs help. It's such a small thing, but recognizable. Just like not recognizing sarcasm, which fortunately does not become a running joke like, for example, Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. Rose Byrne is great (as usual) and Hugh Dancy knows how to play Adam in a fantastic way. And the ending shows guts and shows that also love is not always invincible. As much as we'd like to.

Asperger's syndrome is portrayed fairly well here, in any case I recognize a lot of myself in Adam. Although he is a bit overly wooden. But that's typical for movie characters of course, there has to be a bit of exaggeration to make the movie interesting.
