I know from experience that although Morocco is only a few hours' flight from Schiphol, the culture shock could not be greater: in Morocco the clothes, the colors, the values, the culture, in short, everything is different. This film manages to atmospherically portray that 'other' culture: it all looks very exotic and at the same time very old Dutch, as indeed with Vermeer's Milkmaid. It is the strong point of the film, because the story is not special and the film is slow, so it is otherwise quite boring. The title of course not only refers to the child but also to the patriarchy, which is not physically present in the film but which determines everything.

Maryam Touzani earned deserved respect with her endearing film, which once again highlights how law, religion and culture place women in a disadvantaged position.

Both women - what fine performances - fully experience this phenomenon, but it is especially in the case of unwed motherhood that human, loving behavior is made impossible and only doubts, pain and drama remain.

After the great Le Bleu du Caftan (Film, 2022) I was curious about director Maryam Touzani's other work. In this Adam she also works with the Belgian actress Lubna Azabal, who once again impressed me. Here she plays a similar character. Hardworking and running his own business, but burdened by social drama. She then comes across as very sullen and closed off.

Yet this does not stop her, after many doubts, from offering shelter to the pregnant and rejected Samia. Once again a very impressive social drama where the actresses are close to your skin. An intense and very authentic image is created with a camera close to it. The excellent acting does the rest.

Really enjoyed this film and highly recommended for those who love arthouse. It's always nice to see those little local delicacies being reviewed. For example, that labor-intensive ball of spaghetti was very popular among customers. Nice side characters too, like that man Slimani who is crazy about Abla. Indeed, the ending does not seem to give a clear picture of what happens next. I think she keeps it, but leaves. I think there are enough signals to indicate that the bond between her and her child is too strong to allow her to be adopted.
