Arizona Dream plot

"A rebellious young man. With his own version of the future. And his own fantasy of love."

23-year-old Axel Blackman broke with his past after his parents died in a car accident. He left for New York where he now, three years later, works for the Department of Hunting and Fishing. Until his uncle Leo calls him back to his hometown in Arizona. He demands that Axel be his best man during his wedding. And that he will continue to work with him. He meets Elaine Stalker, a quirky woman who was widowed after shooting her husband. She lives with her stepdaughter Grace. With no personal ambitions, Axel finds himself torn between the conflicting desires of Leo, Elaine and Grace.

Kusturica in shape is fireworks. And that is again the case here. The pleasant chaos makes for a wonderfully comical and colorful film in which the characteristics of the house that I love so much are again fully present. Add to that the wonderful cast and you have a top film. I don't find the fact that it repeats itself a bit of a problem, there are always enough finds in it to be independent enough. The only downside is that almost all of his films falter halfway through, including here. 4 stars.

For me, it remains a film that is difficult to reach, that Coast-Turican mix of magical realism, madness and tragedy. You have to love it or learn to love it. Because Arizona Dream has a hard and very gloomy undertone beneath the sometimes funny surface. It seemed to me to be a very personal work about people with dreams that never seem to come true because fate has a strange tendency to always get in the way. Fortunately, Kusturica brings some color and cheerfulness, otherwise we would be at Lars Von Trier level I'm afraid. An immature loser Axel enters into a relationship with a much older but mentally insane woman who could almost be his mother. You also have a suicidal daughter-in-law and Axel's cinephile buddy. For me it was mainly Vincent Gallo who stole the show with his own North by Northwest experience and his one man show with Raging Bull in the background. Do like this sort of thing. Also a nice role from Lily Taylor that I like to see played. I didn't really like the Depp-Dunaway couple, on the other hand. They didn't seem very well matched. Pretty okay, but sometimes a bit too much of a good thing.

I should have known with the director of Crna Macka, Beli Macor (1998) that this would not be just any regular feature film. I had no prior knowledge and I still got a bit wrong with this Arizona dream. No ordinary drama, rather comical or even absurd in nature without coming across as cold-hearted.

None of the characters appealed to me. Not the crazy Axel fluttering in and out, not the suicidal daughter, nor the crazy mother. Not much chemistry between the characters for me. The plot was also bizarre, not to mention the flying fish. At the opening scene with the Eskimos I took the DVD out of the player after a few minutes to check if it was really the right disc.

A film about fantasy, about dreams and reality with its own touch of Kusturica with twisted characters and absurd situations. May work, but not with me this time.
