Sad story and despite the harrowing conditions, the film rarely touches. Only the scenes with the two little ones can evoke a moment of emotion. Perhaps it is due to the ambiguity in the story about what preceded it.

Of course, the acting performances of Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes are appreciated.

Before she became a glamorous star, Jennifer Lawrence showed her acting talent in this independent production. In a lumberjack shirt and unwashed hair, she plays a seventeen-year-old who has heavy responsibilities thrown on her shoulders.

The Ozark Mountains in Missouri leave a desolate impression. Hillbilly is a pejorative name for a mountain dweller with little development. The locals weren't very hospitable already, and there's a drug gang. Ree's father was a crank cook - someone who makes methadone in an illegal lab. The title has a literal and a figurative meaning. Bare trees and hats make it clear that it's winter, and she's looking for her father's bones. Like a dog digging for a winter's bone is an expression for a persistent search.

Debra Granik paints a raw and realistic picture of a part of the US that you rarely see in the cinema. She based it on the book by Daniel Woodrell, who grew up in this area. Regional elements include a weasel with a white winter coat, squirrel hunting, a venison stew, and a bluegrass band with banjo. Some secondary roles are played by local residents. Jennifer Lawrence, who changed her accent, should be allowed to play these kinds of roles more often.

Film adaptation of Daniel Woodrell's book of the same name in which 17-year-old Ree [Jennifer Lawrence] is forced to take care of brother [Isaiah Stone], sister [Ashlee Thompson] and her seriously ill mother [Valerie Richards] now that their father has to go to trial for producing illegal drugs. While she gets some help from a sympathetic neighbor [Shelley Waggener], she risks losing the house when her father — who has given the house as surety — doesn't show up at his own hearing. Eviction seems inevitable, but Ree suspects her father has been the victim of revenge and turns to her uncle [John Hawkes] for help. Filmed during the winter against the desolate backdrop of the Ozark Mountains, which emphasize the gloomy tone of the story a bit too much. Made for just $2 million, this low budget thriller managed to earn 4 Oscar nominations, including for John Hawks and the hitherto virtually unknown Jannifer Lawrence, for whom it was the springboard to roles in the X- men franchise and The Hunger Games and who within a few years became the highest paid actress in the world.
