Atrocious dialogues and unsurpassed nonsense are the order of the day in this completely incomprehensible and deadly pretentious attempt by Baumbach to adapt Don Dellilo's bestseller of the same name. The book is known for its linguistic ingenuity and in any case turns out to be unfilmable in Baumbach's hands. The story, as far as you can tell, concerns a professor of Nazism [Adam Driver] who has to evacuate with his family after an explosion in the area sends a poisonous cloud towards their hometown. There is an awful lot of talking, but there is no rope to tie. An exhausting, often downright baffling failure that is hard to sit through. But if you manage to make it to the end credits, at least watch it. It's by far the best moment in the movie, even if it's post-meal mustard.

Excellent film about a family in an American town in the 1980s. Not exactly tonal, but all good segments. The dynamics within the family are well portrayed and the dialogues are fascinating. The whole evacuationwas pretty funny and reminded me of the Chevy Chase Vacation movies. A bit pretentious, but 4.0 stars are appropriate.

I thought it was a fairly unbalanced film, but you could also call it eclectic. It's been over a week since I saw him and as I expected I've already forgotten most of it. But it was a kind of triptych, I remember that, and I especially enjoyed the second part.
What I remember are the, in my eyes, not very successful lightning-fast dialogues, in which low and highbrow sentences collided at a murderous pace. Can be quite fun at times, but it felt like a trick that I figured out too quickly.
Furthermore, many Wes Anderson-like images full of symmetry, which also felt like an (annoying) trick. I found the scene with the truck driver in the mix with the Hitler speech very strong. Yes, now it started, I thought. That was true. The second part was also mega-irritating at times, but that gas cloud gave things a nice atmosphere, mysterious and grim. The third part was the proverbial night candle.
Because enough happened I was not bored for a moment, but it was not very memorable. My least favorite Baumbach so far.
