Welcome to the Rileys plot
Years after the sudden death of their teenage daughter, Lois and Doug Riley are still numb. She has isolated herself from the outside world by not stepping outside the door anymore. He tries to find passion and love in an affair. When his mistress dies unexpectedly, Doug flees further heartbreak on a business trip to New Orleans, where he meets 16-year-old stripper Mallory. He decides to stay in New Orleans and seeks rescue from Mallory by taking care of her. Lois realizes this is her last chance to save her marriage and the inevitable moment to take matters into her own hands has arrived.

A bit of an unbelievable story about dealing with grief and perhaps it is precisely the unusualness of the situations outlined that keeps the attention going, in a film with good direction and imaging and which owes a lot to the impressive acting of James Gandolfini.

Americans (Hollywood) can't make a good, convincing and believable drama... The first hour of the film is fascinating and promising, then it sinks by ten minutes, to a very predictable, slow, lame story, with the level of a "soap series". The hooker gets on the right path, a couple who have lived past each other for a lifetime, literally fall into each other's arms, (believe me as an expert, that that rarely happens!!) the sun is shining again and everything is biscuit and egg....Pfffff, missed opportunity. You have to let the French, Spaniards, Scandinavians do these kinds of stories, then the real drama literally jumps off the canvas and you feel the inescapable pain yourself ..... It is striking that there is no chemistry between Gandolfini and Stewart and Gandolfini and Leo. What the film ignores is that the three use each other as an escape, which in itself is a drama in itself....

When Americans venture into an arthouse film, you get a gem like this. I don't care if it fits in the known box. Glad to see Gandolfini at work again. It's a shame we won't be seeing more of his movies. And only the 2nd film from Jake Scott who can keep the film small and not fall into Hollywood traps.
At the poster, my attention was mainly focused on Gandolfini and Stewart. One duo that complement each other nicely. You notice when Gandolfini pulls the young actress up. She shows that she is more than the dumbass from the Twilight series. We must not forget the role of Melissa Leo. In the beginning, she is still in the shadow of the duo, which gives them time to visualize their growing relationship. But further on in the film she also comes into the picture more and she gives the film the second breath it needs to complete the story.
Beautiful intimate film with a small core of actors with just enough beautiful music and beautiful images. It doesn't overwhelm, but makes you look at the film more intensely than you would first suspect. A film that you can enjoy with its beautiful moments.
