Over the course of a week, twenty-two souls arrive at a gate between life and death. All souls are allowed to choose a memory here, which they can take with them to their next life.

I still have a lot to see from Koreeda. This was not my favorite movie in that regard. However, the setting is fantastic and the idea is also well humanized. The most interesting thing is how the different people are characterized and how they deal with their last moments. The story of the employees is well put together, but does not grab your throat; like in some of the other movies. Perhaps because of the calm tone and the many characters. But the film is definitely worth a watch.

Every time again.
Not the first time I've reviewed this one, but it continues to amaze me. How Koreeda mixes script and reality here is exceptional. I still don't know which segments are scripted, but I don't really need to.
The side story is a little less interesting anyway. I am mainly concerned with the visitors, who each represent a beautiful aspect of the issue. Favorites remain the two grannies, exceptional characters.
An interesting point is especially the translation from Wandafuru Raifu to After Life, a difference in culture that, in my opinion, perfectly reflects why I usually prefer Asian affairs. Because although the concept leaves enough room for spirituality and religion, the film is miles away from that.

Nice idea, those memories that the dead can take with them. The stories they tell come across as genuine, told with feeling, but the film didn't pull me in and grab me completely. It even felt on the long winded side at times. It is a very calm film, original and emotional. Not the best Koreeda movie I've seen, but good. A 7. 3.5*
