The true story of a journalist who risked her life in search of the truth. In the mid-1990s, Dublin was practically at war with a few powerful drug lords vying for power. Their most feared enemy was not the police, but the brave Veronica Guerin (Blanchett) who investigated and exposed the drug trade. She had to weigh her responsibilities to her readers and country against the interests of her family at home. Her enormous efforts, which changed Ireland forever, made her a national folk heroine.

Impressive movie. I didn't know very much about what Veronica Guerin has meant for Ireland and the reduction of crime, but this film shows in an impressive way what Guerin has done. A fearless journalist, who stood her ground and was not easily discouraged.
Blanchett knows how to give shape to Guerin in an impressive way and especially the choice between her health and family, and the hunt for the drug criminals, is well portrayed. Guerin's research into money flows and tax evasion is only briefly touched upon, but it puts even more emphasis on Guerin. And what she had to endure in her struggle, which sometimes seems more like fighting against the beer quay. Also compliments for the beautiful and atmospheric music.

I definitely don't think this movie is overrated. Yes, there are quite a few names that might not stick easily, but it didn't bother me that much. I didn't know the story so this was quite interesting. Veronica Guerin is basically a do-gooder, and in the end her actions and her shocking death may have paid off more than the final article she would write.
Schumacher creates what I think is a fine Irish atmosphere. Blanchett acts excellently and of course she carries the film. You also get a certain respect for her perseverance. It's her calling. I find such people inspiring and the film portrays her as such. I found the ending very strong with special soundtrack that I thought fit well. 4*

Reasonable.
Not really startling, but Joel Schumacher makes it a nice watchable film. The limited playing time and the good acting also help. And perhaps also essential, because Veronica Guerin herself is not such a sympathetic person. I would even describe them as annoying. And selfish, although that is not really discussed. The film often portrays her as a heroine against the drug war. I actually knew nothing about that beforehand, I had never even heard of Guerin. So now it is. Good lesson, decent movie.
