"Hear me now brother. I was washed in the same blood as you."
Teen Chris lives with his father John and ailing brother Tim on a remote ranch in the southern US. They receive an unexpected visit from Uncle Deel, John's sneaky brother, who has just come out of prison and has come to visit for a reason. After a tragedy occurs, the two brothers are no longer sure of their lives and they flee.

David Gordon Green delivered one of my favorite comedies of the past 5 years with Pineapple Express. I knew that the man also produced serious work, but I never did anything with that knowledge. Strolling through a video store in the old-fashioned way, I came across this one. The film starts off great, with a nicely shot chase. The next half hour is also very nice, nice sultry 'Southern' atmosphere, unusual and fascinating characters, and a good soundtrack. Unfortunately after the murder of father John , this film goes completely off track, but in super-super slow motion. A slow cat-and-mouse game ensues that repeats itself over and over again, so that Gordon Green's beautiful photography loses its power enormously.
Ultimately, I'd like to call this an interesting fail with a bit of goodwill. Nice shot, good atmosphere, but this should have been shorter for at least 30-40 minutes.

Mediocre film in which two brothers flee when their uncle comes along with bad intentions. The atmosphere is good here. However, the tone of the film is rather unbalanced due to a mix of drama, thriller and road movie that does not work well. Furthermore, the film quickly becomes tedious.

Undertow has everything it takes to be a strong drama. However, in practice it does not all work out. The characters seem almost apathetic and there is little emotion for everything you see. The fairly simple story can of course not be saved in such a way.
