Pleasant surprise.

Tideland may be a bit on the long side and it collapses at times by coming up with less interesting moments. Still, there is plenty to see in this film. Visually it is often overwhelming. It all looks weird and beautiful. In terms of photography, set design and effects, it is all very beautiful. Bizarre is also the story of the endearing Jeliza-Rose who has been through enough at a young age and is now more or less on her own. By escaping reality, she creates a fantasy world in which she takes friends with her doll head to explore the area. Here she meets the strange Dell and Dickens. And from that follow even more strange situations and bizarre scenes. The movie literally ends with a bang.

Acting is very nice. Especially Jodelle Ferland is very good at her young age. What a talent. Bridges does it on his Dudes. McTeer and Fletcher are also perfectly cast. But it is mainly Ferland that steals the show here.

Very different from the disappointing Brothers Grimm that came out in the same year. More Gilliam. And this is how I prefer to see him at work. Despite a rather heavy subject, he turns it into a narrative as well as audio/visual and a real feast.

I had my reservations beforehand. Especially because Twelve Monkeys, that much acclaimed Gilliam film, was quite disappointing. Tideland was not too bad for me in the end.

Especially at the beginning, this extravagant Alice fairy tale had me completely on board. A young girl (handsome role by Jodelle Ferland) survives in the worst possible family situation imaginable, until her mother dies and her father (a hilarious Jeff Bridges, unfortunately we lost him too soon) decides to move to a dilapidated mansion. Hilarious is Jeliza-Rose's temperament in the 'grown-up environment' when she completely goes along with her father's antisocial behavior during the bus trip there.

Unfortunately, after half an hour, the film lapses into the representation of Jeliza-Rose's fairytale world. We are used to extravagant figures from Gilliam, but the mentally handicapped Dickens was really too much for me, especially in combination with - you read that correctly - the talking doll heads. In this context, it is wry that Gilliam does a lot with childlike imagination and maintains the perspective of Jeliza-Rose throughout the runtime, but at the same time clearly does not make a children's film; at times Tideland is relatively crude and graphic, while Dickens' struggle with sexuality requires a psychoanalytic interpretation (as far as I'm concerned that whole theme was not necessary here, but that aside).

Maybe my score would have been lower had I not had such low expectations, but now I was quite satisfied, despite the extremely mediocre second hour. During the grande finale, Gilliam brings reality and fantasy together in an intriguing way.

3*

Tideland is a strange experience that I didn't see coming because I entered the film very white. Well, that in itself doesn't scare me, but this surreal fantasy world didn't touch me very much. Visually you will enjoy yourself with all those bizarre characters and experiences, but once after that it becomes a rudderless event.

Macabre and lugubrious, but at the same time also a humorous approach such as you sometimes see in Tim Burton. It just didn't always work. However, it was not the fault of our lovely little girl who is actually doing quite well.

Where Swiss Army Man (Film, 2016) also has its morbid side with a corpse, I was not completely convinced here, partly because it never really gets interesting.
