"No picture in 1940 will have bigger thrills!"

Paul and Joe face corrupt traders and fierce competition. An overworked Paul loses control one night and finds himself missing an arm. Paul looks for another job at the urging of his always overprotective wife Pearl. Rather unbalanced film about freebooters in the American transport sector during the Great Depression. The first part of the film has little to do with the second part, in which Ann Sheridan (still in good form as a barmaid) and Humphrey Bogart barely appear on screen. As far as Bogart is concerned, it is not so surprising that he has no more than a supporting role, because he had yet to enter his glory years.

The story of the second part is completely different, but not necessarily better. A refined Ida Lupino draws all the attention to herself as a manipulative bitch. This is at the expense of the often undervalued actor George Raft, actually the only constant factor in this film.

I can't get very enthusiastic about it as a whole, but unfortunately that's often the case with Raoul Walsh films.

Great to see George Raft and Humphrey Bogart at work as brothers. Not even in the criminal business but as truckers who fight for their existence. That was enough to make this film perfect for me. Ultimately, Bogart clearly plays second fiddle here. At that time, George Raft was still top of the bill but it wouldn't be long before Bogart took over from him, partly due to a number of bad choices by Raft (as mentioned on this forum). And this duo is also completed by the radiant Ann Sheridan and the always sharp-looking Ida Lupino.
Raoul Walsh succeeds in creating this crime drama in a solid way and without frills. The film is mainly based on very nice sharp dialogues - the influence of screwball is certainly felt. Furthermore, the psychological state of Ida Lupino is also a theme towards the end, with the approach of an underlying fresh trauma. Psychology and sharp dialogues are two elements that would later become important in film noir. So it is not very surprising that this film - within the semi-crime setting - is sometimes also considered part of the genre. Some twists in the film should be taken with a grain of salt, but all in all this is still an entertaining work. For Warner Bros a typical working class story in which the protagonists work their way up the social ladder.

Good film about two brothers who have a truck together and earn money with transport. The first half is mainly about the existence as a truck driver at the time. The second half is a bit more plot-driven. Because of this, the film sometimes lacks some direction. Entertaining because enough happens and the cast does a great job.
