The Magdalena Monasteries in Ireland, run by the Sisters of Mercy, were Catholic institutions where "fallen" women were taken by their families to atone for their sins. Margaret was raped by her cousin at a wedding. She entrusted this to a friend and was taken to Magdalena the very next morning. In the orphanage where Bernadette is one of the older girls, the pleasure she shares with the younger girls in the orphanage becomes fatal when the girls' isolation is broken by a few playful boys outside the fence to which she reacts curiously.

Definitely worth taking a look. So bad for all those women: all those humiliations, violence, abuse, ... by those nuns and that this continued until 1996.
A very good/funny scene was the one with the pastor who gets the creeps :d
