Best silent film by Hitchcock that I have seen so far. The first half hour is quite entertaining and it ends really strong. Furthermore, there are enough nice ideas from the grandmaster, whereby you notice that the man is quite visually oriented (and still was years later with all his well-written scripts). But I still do not find this kind of silent film suitable for drama, or to really tell a story. The way of acting and image alone make it a completely different art form that I just have less of. Film for me is being somewhere else for a while, but with this kind of film that does not work and boredom quickly strikes. 2.5*.

There is no humour in this unadulterated melodrama set on the Isle of Man but using locations in Cornwall. Gentle giant Carl Brisson is the naive fisherman Pete who has become engaged to barmaid Kate [Anny Ondra] and asks his best friend Philip [Malcolm Keen] to keep an eye on him (!) while he is away at sea for a long time. A genuine love triangle with soapy scenes is the result. Beautifully filmed, but it is not a very interesting story.

The last silent in Hitch's oeuvre is set on the Isle of Man, although it was filmed in Cornwall. A Manxman is an inhabitant of that island that I had never heard of before watching this film, I must admit. To me it came across as a real melodrama, but well-performed by the master and his crew. Actors who break the fourth wall at strategic moments, beautiful photography, excellent editing. And of course a lot of expression from the actors as befits silents. This soap opera is set in a different era with different morals. In the 1920s, the UK is still a world empire with overseas territories and all. It was more than ever a class society, which is also reflected in the film in the mutual relationships between the characters. And then there is the impact of (Christian) religion on society and the judiciary. Suicideis a sin, and is actually seen as a crime in civil law. And then we haven't even talked about the shame of adultery, a grave sin against the sacred institution of marriage. As a viewer, you have to be able to identify with that. Furthermore, a film with a brisk pace and partly filmed on location. After this, the audience at the time of the talkies would get used to pure studio work. A nice conclusion to a first phase in Hitchcock's career. Of course, it is not a typical Hitchcock, but talent was clearly present.
