Reasonable film in which a boy delivers love letters between a wealthy bride-to-be and her secret love. Pretty slow, and it also takes a while for the story to get any direction. The 'game' that is played with the boy comes out well. The film is set at the beginning of the last century, and the whole decoration and images look nice.

Fransman knows how to summarize the film almost perfectly. But for now I'm less enthusiastic than he is, while one of my favorite actors, Alan Bates, plays a leading role. That's because the film was already about halfway through before I realized what the film is actually about. In the second part you can feel the tension growing, but in the beginning it is a slow story about a rather posh aristocratic family, culminating in the irritating behavior and comments of Leo's friend. As a result, my interest had largely evaporated by the time the story got more compelling. The surprising twist towards the end is definitely a find. I may have to give this movie a second chance. I don't rule out my rating going up. The movie constantly reminded me of Brideshead Revisited; not quite right, but still.

Very beautiful, sensitive film, about romance but much more about adolescence and class distinctions.

The state of mind, the feelings, the experiences of the wealthy elite of the young Leo are very subtly depicted.

Outstanding interpretation and photography.

Nice British (who else's) work.
