Mediocre. Not very special, and at times just plain boring. Fortunately Eisenberg convinced, and this time as a doppelganger. If I then make the comparison with the other "doppelganger" film, Enemy, this one still falls short.

Richard Ayoade, known for his very cool humor in series like The IT Crowd and Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, here ventures into an adaptation of Dostoevsky's 'The Double' and the result is a dark, claustrophobic psychological drama with a perfectly cast Jesse Eisenberg as Simon, an insecure, at least proverbially virtually invisible employee whose clumsy attempts to win the heart of colleague Hannah [Mia Wasikowska] seem to come to nothing. Things get worse when a confident, charming new colleague sets his sights on Hannah. Moreover, this new colleague [also Jesse Eisenberg] turns out to be Simon's doppelgänger and that results in an identity crisis on both a spiritual and bureaucratic level. Ayoade shows that with limited lighting, smart camera work and a particularly beautiful and striking soundtrack he manages to create an oppressive atmosphere that is in many ways reminiscent of The Trial by Orson Welles, to which this film is also related in terms of content. Eisenberg is excellent in the lead and in his double role, but the acting in this technically impressive film is very strong across the board. Not a movie to cheer about, but you can enjoy the technical craftsmanship of Ayoade in his promising second feature.
