Beautiful film in which Fiona Maye (Emma Thompson) as a children's court judge in London is confronted with ethical dilemmas when Adam (Fionn Whitehead) refuses to cooperate with a seriously ill, almost adult Jehovah's Witness boy for treatment, leading to his death and she is asked to decision, which, whatever the decision will be, will have far-reaching consequences. Although the premise gives the impression that it is mainly about the ethical dilemma surrounding the decision Fiona has to make about Adam, the film does not spend much time on this on balance. The film actually comes to life, and becomes really interesting, after Fiona has made a seemingly easy, business-like decision on the matter (and the conclusion is that there hardly seemed to be an ethical dilemma). Both Fionn Whitehead and Emma Thompson put in a beautiful rendition, although the majority of the credits really go to Thompson: the layering in her playing is simply of great class. Incidentally, the role of Stanley Tucci should not go unmentioned, who almost threatens to die as an extra due to Thompson's acting violence (but does not).

I am so thankful, I got to attend the movie for free this afternoon. It was actually sold out and I saw it on an extra chair anyway. It took me a while to get in. It wasn't until the boy (Fionn Whitehead) came into the picture that I thought it got really interesting. I was drawn into it, I sometimes found it quite funny or exciting and above all sensitive. Both vulnerable and strong, just like Fiona Maye, the main character played sublimely by Emma Thompson. The other actors also play their roles very well, in my opinion. I think it's a beautiful and moving film, but because I wasn't enthusiastic about the beginning, it does take a star off. 4*

Fiona Maye is a workaholic, who takes on her important job as a judge with great dedication and seriousness and experiences an endearing passage in her life in a case of faith and life.

Emma Thompson is simply stunning in her role, which she insisted she perform, in this film that brings out the parent-child relationship with exceptional clarity.

Handsome movie.
