Intense psychological drama about poverty, false shame and hopeless illusions. In her own words, this was Bette Davis's favorite movie. She is indeed going strong, but nevertheless she is rivaled in that respect by Ernest Borgnine as her husband, who has to watch passively as his dream of the future is slowly but surely shattered. The constantly fighting with her loyalties Debbie Reynolds also delivers a top performance. The lock is the proverbial icing on this delicate cake. Without a doubt a very nice film.

Ernest Borgnine won an Oscar in 1955 for his moving role as the shy, slightly overweight and insecure Marty in the film of the same name that dealt with everyday things in the lives of ordinary people. In A Catered Affair, he plays Tom Hurley, the Padres-Familias who desperately try to prevent his wife Aggie [Bette Davis] from spending the last of his savings on a lavish wedding celebration in honor of their daughter Jane [Debbie Reynolds] and Ralph [Rod Taylor [ the son of wealthy, somewhat haughty parents. Although the bride and groom state they want a simple wedding, Aggie insists on giving her daughter a grand wedding for her own reasons.

Although Bette Davis enjoyed playing a role without glamor, her performance here is a bit disappointing. Of course Davis's usual flamboyance doesn't suit me as a simple housewife, but Aggie is the main character in this film and Davis plays so subdued here that the emotion is barely palpable. The film comes to life when Borgnine openly opposes and brings life to life in the conversations between mother and daughter and Barry Fitzgerald as Aggie's brother who has been living with the Hurleys for some time. The result is a film that is fine to sit through, but that does not live up to expectations, especially for fans of Bette Davis.

Borgnine and Davis are both well on their way and very credible as an older couple in which the routine has crept in quite a bit.

I don't really know Fitzgerald very well as an actor, but he plays very well in his comedic way.

The rest of the cast does it properly but gets a bit snowed under here , the story is certainly recognizable and remains fascinating until the feel good but nevertheless strong ending .
