Sir Djuke hits the nail on the head with his comment: “An extraordinary film about very ordinary people.” Grim social-psychological drama about ordinary people who are drowned in the anonymous masses and for whom “The American Dream” will always remain a dream. Director King Vidor has made many beautiful films during his impressive career, especially during his early period (including The Big Parade, 1925). This is without a doubt his masterpiece, thanks to the sublime (revolutionary for that time) camera work and the beautiful performances of James Murray and Eleanor Boardman, Vidor's then wife.
A must for every film lover, especially if you like detailed, realistic dramas. Still fascinating upon review.
Let me see if I can get my hands on the sequel (Our Daily Bread, 1934), because I've never seen that movie.

A nice down to earth film. As a parent, you idealize and perfect the qualities and capabilities of your children and hope that they will be successful and go far in society. The best is just good enough, something like that. However, more factors play a role than just chasing the 'American dream'.

Was nominated for the Oscars at the time and it is clear why. The title of the film is also apt. Although Sims wants to rise above the crowd (or is expected to do so), he remains stuck in that general gray mass.

Beautifully shot also when Sims arrived in New York by boat. The first thing that hit him was the crowd crisscrossing the streets and a little later the legion of desks with monotonous paperwork.
The ending is quite moving, hard too when it turns out that he has failed, for himself, but also in the eyes of others, his wife in the first place.
