The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas plot

"Lines may divide us, but hope will unite us."

Berlin 1943. 8-year-old Bruno moves with his family to a place that is far away, where there is nothing to do and where there is no one to play with. Their new home stands next to a fence that stretches as far as the eye can see, a fence that shields Bruno from the strange people he sees moving behind. Bruno wants to be an explorer and decides to investigate. On one of his journeys, he meets a boy whose life and circumstances are very different from his own. Nevertheless, the boys make friends, but it is a friendship that does not remain without consequences...

Not only is The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas yet another holocaust kitsch, but the ending was downright disgusting. I'll come back to that last one in a moment. In any case, this film has no right to exist for me. I thought the plot was bland with the group of Nazis who can't say often enough that Jews are bad and then the wise boy who resists all indoctrination. It is full of stereotypes and also a lot of unbelievable things (of course such a camp has hardly any guards). I've seen it more often and better. Two stars and you're done. I'm just wondering how you can get your head around centralizing the whole drama on the German boy and his family in the end. Oh look mothers scream and look how Dad searches for Bruno in vain. Look at them being pathetic! The rest of the victims are suddenly in second place. It reminds me a bit of the screaming headlines in the Dutch press. “plane crashes in Verweggistan, one Dutch dead”. Mark Herman seems to have forgotten that six million Jews were killed. Then you must be a disgusting fascist.

Good. After Jojo Rabbit another film about the Holocaust that is more aimed at children, but which is much better. Not everything comes across as believable, but the film is never jolly and is just serious. The story is captivating and the ending is quite crushing.

What else is there to say? It was recorded properly and yes, I didn't need English, but it's no different, and it didn't bother me that much. 3*.

Film about whether or not to know, or want to know, about the "labour camps" and what was going on there.

Thought it was a bit contrived, although the relationship between the children occasionally touches the heart and the ending is very, very suggestive.

Remains recommended for all those who need to be taught the knowledge of these horrific times, in other words the youth in the first place.
