Matt Masters (John Wayne) is angry with his father for leaving him at a young age, after which his mother died. Matt is sure he's going to kill his dad, but when it turns out that the friendly popular stranger Daniel Daniel Howitt (Carey) - nicknamed The Shepherd - is his father, he becomes confused.
