The Runaways plot

"It's 1975 and they're about to explode."

Los Angeles, 1975. Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, two teenagers with punk in their blood, meet and become the heart and soul of 'The Runaways'. The girl rock band, a collection of misfits, will be a major influence on future generations of female musicians. Guitarist Joan is pure rock & roll. Blonde Cherie, who looks like Brigitte Bardot, is the sexy lead singer of The Runaways. Led by the diabolical impresario Kim Fowley and with their image of strong women, the unpolished talents become a worldwide success.

Kirsten Stewart and Dakota Fanning as punk rock goddesses Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, the most famous faces of the taboo-breaking band "The Runaways"? Those girls are way too good for that… at least, that's what their image suggests. But while the sex, drugs & rock n roll that were part of the short-lived career of The Runaways (and caused the death blow) are clearly visible here, this is a pretty decent biographical film. Not surprising, since the screenplay is based on Currie's autobiography and Jett was one of the executive producers. Fanning and Stewart prove their versatility here with their convincing acting, but it is a pity that the role of the other band members is somewhat marginalized here. Michael Shannon dominates the film as the demanding, opportunistic, but successful manager Kim Fowley, who resembles that other punk rock manager: Malcolm McLaren. It helps if you're a fan of the music, but it's not a requirement to appreciate this movie.

I can still remember the band The Runaways from an article in the Muziek Express from that time. That was indeed a cool article. I was 14 or so at the time. But other than that I didn't care much for it. I just didn't like the music. I didn't take that band very seriously either and it was over very quickly. I don't think they really became known in the Netherlands anyway. So I was curious about the movie. Actually more to see what that band actually represented. Well, still not really much. Hardly worth making a movie about. There are so many bands you could make a comparable film about. And usually they are boring documentaries that are especially interesting for the fans. There are therefore plenty of boring documentaries about the history of a band. But then I would rather have a feature film, in which actors take over the role of the real musicians to make something interesting out of it. But hey, you still won't get a good movie with an uninteresting story.

Bad.

Quite disappointing since this comes from Sigismondi. Director who managed to direct a rather atmospheric horror film to the big screen 10 years later. However, this film is completely different, which may be due to the fact that it marked a directorial debut. Apparently that also means easy scoring with raw images.

The acting is provided by two names who have made quite a career. Nevertheless, they are both very boring characters with no life coming out for a moment. It barely manages to grow. I understand the drama of their characters, but I especially think it's two strange birds who do get somewhere but as actresses don't take the trouble to put this down nicely. A total lack of expression in particular.

Also very ugly, remarkable for a director who is also a photographer. Photography just feels dusty and easy. It's a matter of choosing the ugliest locations and outfits, that's the impression I get especially from The Runaways. Nice raw interpretation of the rest of the film, but nothing that really catches on. In addition, the film does not come in on an emotional level.

It does have pluses and some remarkable scenes, but otherwise it is mainly a matter of waiting until the actresses change their facial expressions while walking around in a boring world. Then you also get a boring movie. Maybe the film can work well if you can move around in the world. In my case, I was able to put my mind to the credits.
