As we are used to from the Dardenne brothers, this film also deals with a social issue – in this case that of the hard existence of refugees living illegally – in a raw realistic style without much drama or frills. The fact that amateur actors are used gives it an extra authentic feeling (although the fights in particular are not very credibly acted). Fortunately, the story of the two refugee children who are caught between smugglers and drug traffickers as they try to gain legal status and send money to their families in Africa quickly builds tension and manages to hold that tension, so the film does not only highlights the refugee problem with the exploitation of minors, but is also simply entertaining.

Teenager Loktia [Joely Mbundu] and younger Tori [Pablo Schils] have fled from Africa to Italy by boat and now reside in Belgium where they are completely under the clutches of Betim [Alban Ukaj], who forces them to help him with his illegal practices with the vague promise that he will make sure they get the right papers to apply for asylum. What keeps Tori and Lokta going is the hope for a better future and the support they give each other. Their despair therefore increases when Betim tries to separate them. Amateurs Mbundu and Schils fall short in the dramatic scenes, but the Dardennes paint a sharp picture of the exploitation of immigrants and use simple means to portray the special bond between the two main characters. Compelling and with a surprising denouement.

Poignant social issues are consistently central to the oeuvre of the Dardenne brothers, as is the case in this film: refugees in search of security in their new homeland.
Now I must honestly say that the brothers' fist has hit harder in previous films. Tension is created quite artificially here and the story pulls quite a bit. Depends also on the two non-professional amateurs who are not always convincing.
Having said that, bureaucracy and crime stand in the way of realizing dreams, that's what this film makes clear... but, we already knew this, bad enough.
I miss the hard slap in the face that opens my eyes.
