One of David Cronenberg's tightest films, the austerity of which does not stand in the way of a beautiful twist and the accompanying emotional punch. As a big fan of Samuel Beckett, I had noticed before the similarity of Ralph Fiennes' looks and attire in this film with the usual bums from Beckett's work (and with Beckett's own "Spartan" head), but now I'm reading the IMDb trivia even that "Samuel Beckett was one of the director's touchstones for the film. Photographs of the playwright were pinned around the sets, and Fiennes' hairstyle is even modeled after Beckett's." Oddly enough, that's the film's only flaw, because I find Fiennes's interpretation at times too theatrical, too contrived, too staged with carefully built-in intermissions and artificial murmurs; maybe he copied all that from authentic schizophrenic people, but in this film I find it too artificial at times. However, the rest of the cast plays very natural, with special mention of Miranda Richardson who here very convincingly portrays two completely opposite characters (and even a third, because I think Dennis also sees the landlady of the " halfway house" just for the slut?). Impressive movie.

Very boring film again from Cronenberg.

It started reasonably, mysterious and somewhat atmospheric. But Cronenberg had apparently already shot up his gun. Because once it's clear where it's going, the film feels very slow and uninspired. There is no atmosphere at all.

It is clear that his films do not appeal to me at all. Dullness at its peak.

1.5* for the first quarter of an hour.

A film with a special approach in which the memories from childhood are visually represented with the adult version of Dennis Clay. It's just not always right because as a child he couldn't have been everywhere and always. It is therefore also a matter for the viewer to estimate to what extent the real and the fantasy of Dennis intermingle.

Fine role by the way from Fiennes who puts down a credible acting performance by a psychologically unstable man. The film has a slow pace and only sporadically releases information that would make some people drop out. The film seems to linger, but at the same time the film was threatening and above all atmospheric. That was also the main reason why I found the film very entertaining and I absolutely wanted to keep watching.

A great twist that gives the sequels a completely different view of the entire film. Great setting too, the gloomy depressing environment was directly proportional to the pathetic psychotic character of 'Spider'.
