A grim beginning, almost like a neorealist film, then a beautifully lyrical middle section that makes you feel that things can't go well without money, without work, without a roof over their heads, two hippies fifteen years avant la lettre, together on the road. I don't even know if what I'm about to say was actually the case, but despite the artificial chewing gum and the incontinence diaper she walks around in at the beginning of her stay on the boat, I can well imagine that Harriet Andersson became a sex symbol, at least for many boys who felt the urge to do what had to be done in those oppressive fifties. The fact that she doesn't conform to any norm at the end - neither to that of society as a dutiful mother, nor to that of the viewer as a cuddly girl - only makes her more rebellious, intense, elusive and stronger.
Of course, it is no longer as shocking and innovative as it was in 1953, but – as is the case with many "old" films – for those who can empathize with the situation and identify with the characters, this can still be an emotional and appealing experience – life in 2019 has become more spacious and offers modern man a lot of freedom, but there are still ties that pinch and a social pressure that looks over the shoulders of those who actually want to follow their own path.
I also had to think of The story of two nice people by Koos Speenhoff from 1910, re-recorded in 1969 by Frans Halsema. But things turned out very differently for that duo.

Spring, summer, autumn and winter with Monika. Swedish emotional lyricism full of intimate and dreamy romance that at times strongly reminded one of Vigo's L'Atalante. Two teenagers in love feel oppressed and flee in a small motorboat. They end up in a kind of dream world where reality hardly or not at all seeps through. Hiding is pointless, however, and several negative encounters with the 'outside world' eventually lead to their inevitable return. The ending is a good example of blindness by nostalgia and the fate of the broken couple is therefore unclear. Some scenes contain nudity; appropriate given the signs of rebellion and the urge for freedom. Bergman makes room for silences, which gives sound more impact. Furthermore, beautiful landscape images, convincing acting and without a doubt an interesting representation of 'coping' and reaction patterns.

Moonrise Kingdom for adults. Ingmar Bergman has made some heavier films later, but this one is still quite light. The subject is layered. Two young people who float between teenagers and adults, want to get away from their lives in which the sun hardly seems to shine. A boss who raps their knuckles every day or a father who drinks. The beginning of a summer in which everything seems possible, living from day to day. But life doesn't work that way of course and the two discover that along the way. Although that particular summer will never be forgotten.

The film is a bit less heavy, but admittedly the later Bergman films are visually more interesting. Still, there are regularly beautiful shots and he knows how to play the light beautifully in the black and white setting. The beautiful Harriet Andersson makes the sun shine anyway. Ironic that her (limited) nude scene in the film ensured that this would be the most successful Bergman in the US. Bergman was also sold, because he had a relationship with Andersson during this period. Bergman wrote this film tailor-made for her. That helps and you can also see in Harriet's charisma in the film.
