And then watched the third film adaptation of the book:

Salary

The American version that ultimately turns out to be very un-American/un-Hollywoods. The pacing is very low in this movie, also a feature of the others of course. People stayed away from the cinema as they can't unite sci-fi, Clooney and Soderbergh in a slow movie that goes a little deeper. LOL.

This version of course wins by far in terms of special effects, decors, sets, decoration, etc. The soundtrack by Cliff Martinez is also very strong.

In terms of acting, the character Chris/Kris Kelvin played by Clooney sometimes makes more sense than in the other versions, but the acting is decent, not bad but not spectacular either. The duration of this film is 99 minutes, the Van Nirenburg 142 and Tarkovsky 165 minutes. And in those 99 minutes the same story is told and even then I think the flashback scenes used in this version are too long... So those other films also have a bit too much extra to tell without added value.

All three films use roughly the same philosophical approach. Only Tarkovsky, in my opinion, captivates by adding far too much nonsensical stuff to it. I recommend Nirenburg's version more, if only because of the best acting. But in the end, Soderberg's version is slightly favorite. Especially the compact running time (no, I have nothing against long films) to tell the story and the soundtrack give the extra plus compared to Nirenburg's version.

The original seems to have been completely restored, so I'm going to see it in the cinema soon if I can. I believe this version on DVD was fished out of a single Euro box somewhere.

I don't have the reference of the original, so I'm just judging this movie on its merits, and all in all, this is just a pretty good movie, based on a strong story, although the romance has been given a bit of space in the for my taste. whole, so fun to watch with your girl. Including a pretty happy ending. However, there are still plenty of existential questions that simply go unanswered, you can chew on those yourself.

Decent acting, some nice plot twists, it's just well put together, yet the balance is missing, the other crew members are all in all too little discussed, it remains too focused on Mr. Clooney and his lady, and that irritates at a certain moment, especially when a sugary sweet happy ending is served.

A seven, knowing it could have been so much more with a more balanced script.

Excellent.

The score here surprises me. In audiovisual alone, Steven Soderbergh delivers a gem with Solaris. The film looks fantastic, there is something beautiful to see in every shot. Soderbergh combines stylized images with blue filters and contrasting colors. Thus the film is neither cool nor warm and always mysterious. The soundtrack is also worth checking out.

It will certainly not be to everyone's liking in terms of content, but I did enjoy it. George Clooney puts down a fine role and such a Jeremy Davies in a supporting role is also wonderful. The mystery remains throughout the entire playing time and although it is all clear at the end, I also had to wait until that end. Guessing how it would end had, in my case, been wasted effort.
