Prize-winning (including 5 Scottish Baftas) psychological drama in which Jackie [Kate Dickie], who watches surveillance cameras, believes she recognizes someone [Tony Curran] from her past during her shift. She then sets in motion a plan to get in touch with him and gain his trust.

Dickie is superb in this atmospheric, well-directed film in which director Andrea Arnold manages to build up the suspense by letting you guess, despite subtle hints, the motives behind Jackie's obsessive behavior. The outcome may be somewhat melodramatic and not entirely successful, but that is the only blemish on an intriguing film with excellent camera work by Robby Ryan.

Red Road opens with the main character's all-seeing eye and an overwhelming wall of video screens. The images from surveillance cameras provide Jackie, their primary spectator, with the illusion of control. She appears to have lost control of her own life at an earlier stage.

With a deceptively simple premise, debut director Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank, Wuthering Heights, American Honey) creates a mirrored world for her troubled protagonist. If Jackie's (Kate Dickie) job is to model the modern farce of security and oversight through surveillance, Jackie herself behaves erratically in every way. As if she's living proof that ubiquitous cameras can't tame humans.
