Oldeuboi plot
"Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Weep, and you weep alone."
Without knowing why, Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is kept in a small room for fifteen years. He has no contact with the outside world and is close to madness. One day he wakes up on the roof of an apartment building; he was released without any warning. Determined, Dae-su sets out to find the reason for his captivity. But when he learns that his wife was murdered in his absence, he vows revenge.

Oldeuboi
Absurd and rock hard film. Oldeuboi has some unforgettable moments and the actors are second to none. Choi, Yu and Kang, respect for their insanely strong acting. Compliments also for the music, with a serious goosebumps moment especially at the end. The squid scene, the beautifully choreographed fight, the bridge scene at the end etc. Oldeuboi has many memorable moments. But of course they are in the shadows at the photo album moment, a scene that I will often remember.
The reason why I don't rate Oldeuboi so highly is because all those moments are strong in themselves, but as a whole I was mainly bothered by the messy story (which is simple in itself but is unnecessarily complicated) and Park's confused direction. Scenes seem to be stuck together without any logical order and the story jumps from one piece to the next. Especially in the middle section I had the feeling that something had gone wrong in the editing room. The ending is impressive and the last scene is great.

A real setback. The story didn't really captivate me for a second. Apparently a retelling of a Greek tragedy when I read the comments above. Well, so was A Killing of a Sacred Deer. Another film that failed to captivate me for a single moment. Maybe in a few years when I get to the Stephen Fry books.
Because of the soundtrack and the visuals it's just a matter of time, but other than that I don't see why this scores so high. Downright annoying and fails to shock. By far the worst Korean movie I've seen.

From start to finish, it is a vibrant and intense revenge film in which everything happens and is shown where it has something of Nolan's Memento, the pulp violence of Tarantino, the hectic pace of a Ritchie film and the surrealism of Lynch and the film also consciously confusing to be able to surprise the viewer with unexpected turns, but the story remains clear. Ultimately, the film turns out to be a double revenge film with forbidden sex as the motive. The movie is essentially a pulp movie but the story is good and the multitude of ingredients keeps the movie entertaining.
