Out of the Furnace plot

"Sometimes your battles choose you."

Russell and his younger brother Rodney live in Braddock, a village located in the economically impoverished Rust Belt in the north of America. Russell is the diligent worker of the two, who, like his dad, is content with his life as a factory worker. Rodney, on the other hand, as a soldier plagued by war trauma, tries to survive on gambling money and prize money he wins from illegal boxing fights. He finds himself in debt and out of necessity comes into contact with a group of rednecks from the mountain region above Braddock. They have their own laws and rules. It's up to Russell to keep his brother out of the oven.

What a strong, raw movie! Wonderfully sober film with a top cast and it starts and ends with Eddie Vedder! Enjoyed

soul eyes. In a city that doesn't allow life. There is constant transit of trains. (Heard?) The factory continues to smoke – life goes on, or pretends. Everything in this place points to the ticking of time, the spinning of the wheel of fortune, the falling of the leaves. But really, everything just stands still. No life is possible here, in this corner of an America that dreams of “change”. And no, Obama didn't mean "small change". Although it is small stuff with which people have to make their own living. A house, a car, a job. A job - either in "the mill" or in Iraq - that will eventually kill you. That is: souls. In person.

There are memories, on the soundtrack, the only thing a person has left once adversity has eaten everything around his own skeleton. And, almost of course, only revenge can lead to the “release” that Eddie Vedder eventually sings about. So another revenge movie? Actually, although it must be said that Scott Cooper has two damn good eyes in his head. What a cinematography! Furthermore, 'Out of the Furnace' (does Google Translate correctly translate that as “out of the oven”?) uses a few platitudes (the insight into the reindeer's gaze, for example[/spoiler ]), but the tension works due to the excellent editing and ditto sound track (although Pearl Jam should not have been necessary in my opinion). It's also nice that Cooper is not tempted into a spectacular reckoning: the sobriety suits this film well, although in the end there is little food for thought left once the credits roll over the screen.

Not a genre-transcending film, although I think this filmmaker can still make it. However, 'Out of the Furnace' is one of the best of its kind. But with a cast like this, a well-dosed plot and a pair of eyes behind the camera that has a great sense of suspense, that's no wonder, is it?

3.5*

Indeed a lot of wasted talent in a pretty clichéd story. The blast furnaces to be closed because imported steel from China is cheaper, the misery brought from Iraq (although an average of no less than 20 veterans commit suicide every day), relationship trouble... Bale was good. Affleck too. Harrelson excelled.
