Narayama Bushikô plot
"Only Time Could Change the Cruelty of Tradition… Only Their Love Could Survive It…"
The story is set in the 19th century in a remote village in northern Japan. In this (fictional) community, when the elderly reach the age of 70, they must go to Mount Nara to die for the ancient Gods. This sacrifice ensures that there is food in the village for someone else. Orin is 69 and spends a full year preparing for her death. She tries to prepare her sons and grandchildren as best she can for their future lives before she herself has to die.
