Novecento plot

"From the cradle to the grave - victims of history and change!"

In this film, a friendship develops between landowner Alfredo (Robert De Niro) and farmer's son Olmo (Gérard Depardieu) against the background of Italian life in the first half of the 20th century. The awareness of peasant oppression leads to the rise of fascism in Italy, which puts the friendship to the test.

I put Novecento in front of me for a long time because of its long playing time - I saw the long version of more than 5 hours. Too bad, really, because this epic is worth it. It tells the story of two closest friends who grow up from different backgrounds. One is a farmer's son (Dépardieu), the other is the son of the landowner (De Niro). The first part focuses on their brash and above all carefree youth. Their origin hardly bothers them. We then enjoy the development of the characters and the beautiful idyllic images of the vast vineyards and wheat fields.

The plot only really gets going when both are adults. Their responsibilities are greater and the rise of fascism does their relationship no good. Although Alfredo has an aversion to fascism, he becomes more closely involved with the ideology than he likes. It is also the plot where Donald Sutherland's character comes to full bloom. He has not stolen his name Atilla and imagines himself an opportunistic and psychopathic way to prestige.

Bertolucci succeeds in beautifully reflecting the social trends of the time. The hard farming life and the eternal struggle with nature and the greed of the landowners is strongly expressed. In addition, jealousy and friendship are virtues that run like a thread through the film. Beautiful!

Bertolucci rushes it off a bit.

The opposite of course. A gigantic epic that offers a glimpse of Italy between 1900-1945. The film follows two friends growing up from childhood in a divided Italy.

Bertolucci takes his time and actually it ripples along quietly all the time. Special scenes are reviewed. It is nice how the characters of the main characters are always recognizable. De Niro and Depardieu live out their roles. Sometimes it reminded me a bit of a Pier Pasolini movie. The movie ends nicely.
