Merckx plot

Five Tours de France, five Giros, three World Championships, a Vuelta, a legendary world hour record in Mexico and a whole bunch of classics: between 1967 and 1975 Eddy Merckx won everything there was to win, leaving his competitors behind. In less than a decade he became the ultimate icon of cycling, nicknamed 'the cannibal'. But the more he won, the more his admiration turned into division. How do you keep cycling when adoration gives way to hate?

A look back at the glory years of Eddy Merckx, the Brussels cyclist who made Walloons and Flemish proud Belgians during his glory years. His first road race, his world titles and his legendary (and sometimes controversial) 5 final victories in the Tour de France are covered with the help of race footage and television interviews. A well-behaved chronology in which Hermans covers up the doping scandal during the Giro in a documentary in which greats such as Jacques Anquetil, Jan Janssen and Joop Zoetemelk deliver a few one-liners. Given the lack of new revelations, this is certainly not the “ultimate biography” it claims to be, at most a cycling history lesson for beginners.

One sometimes wonders what else needs to be said about Eddy Merckx. There are already so many reports and documentaries about The Cannibal. Fortunately, the approach is somewhat different with not just a blind enumeration of all his achievements. It is not a starter documentary about the best cyclist ever. The many images in which his victories are of course prominently shown do not even contain any information about the where and when.

The focus of the documentary is more on the individual himself. In the why and the how of his achievements. In the will of wanting and having to win. In his dogged determination to be the best, always and everywhere. When that urge is no longer there, then the kingdom is also over. And he felt that in 1978. It does not always come across in the documentary, but all in all it is certainly not a punishment to watch this.
